Preschool Program - Schedule


A sample schedule is included below. This schedule is flexible and subject to change based on the needs and ages of the children enrolled.

7:00am – 7:30am: Center Opens/ Independent Activities in Honey Bear Room
Individual greeting as each child arrives. The teacher will welcome both child and parent as a quick health check is done to ensure that the child is ready for the day’s activities. Children are free to explore inside according to their own curiosity and interests. They learn to be flexible in their thinking and to make decisions.

7:30am – 8:15am   Independent Activities Outside/ Physical Fitness
This time will include motor development activities as well as art activities. Children learn strength, balance and large muscle coordination, hand to eye coordination, and the concepts of shape, size, color, symmetry, and design. Fifteen minutes of structured fitness activities that encourage a healthy lifestyle will be included during this time. Music is incorporated into the physical activities as the children learn words, rhythm and different styles of physical activities and dance. Stretching and cool down activities end this segment.

8:15am – 8:30am: Clean Up/ Wash Hands for Breakfast

8:30am – 9:00am: Breakfast

Breakfast, as well as all of our meals, is served family style with the children helping to set the table and serve themselves. They learn about nutrition, tastes and food groups.

9:00am – 9:20am: Morning Meeting Time
Before engaging in free choice activities in the various Interest Centers, a short Circle Time occurs where a book with a topic relevant to the day’s focus is shared with the children. Reading with the children enhances literary comprehension, word and letter knowledge as well as social skills.

9:20am –10:10am: Interest Center Time
Children have the opportunity to participate in the interest centers of their choice. Interest centers include dramatic play, math, science, art, blocks, and manipulatives. These areas offer activities that build skills to meet each child’s level of development and provide constant opportunities for learning through play.

10:10am – 10:20am: Clean Up/ Transition to Morning Interest Group

Children participate in a small group teacher directed activity that has been designed to meet a specific area of Desired Results. Through direct experiences that challenge their thinking and employ their emerging skills, children learn to move to the next cognitive level and extend their growth.

10:40am – 11:20am: Children’s Choices Outside
This time will include motor development activities as well as opportunities for art, music and sensory activities.  Children learn strength, balance and large muscle coordination, hand to eye coordination, and work together to develop friendships and teamwork with each other.

11:20am – 11:30am: Clean Up/ Wash Hands for Lunch

11:30am – 12:00pm: Lunch
Children and teachers take advantage of this social time to discuss the day’s activities and the concepts of food and nutrition. After lunch the children help clean the tables, then brush their teeth, use the bathroom and wash hands and faces before quiet time.

12:00pm – 12:15pm: Brush Teeth/ Bathroom/ Wash Hands/Faces

12:15pm – 2:15pm: Quiet Time

A time to rest, the lights are turned down low as teachers play soft music and rub the backs of the children who need help to relax.

2:15pm – 2:30pm: Wake Up/ Bathroom/ Mats Put Away

2:30pm – 3:00pm: Snack Time

Children enjoy a nutritious snack and engage in conversation during another opportunity for social conversation and interaction.

3:00pm – 3:15pm: Afternoon Meeting Time
After their nutritious snack, the children have a group story time. They learn that learning to read is important and enjoyable, and to use more complex language patterns in their own speech.

3:15pm – 3:30pm: Clean Up/ Transition to Outside

3:30pm – 4:20pm: Children’s Choices Outside

This time will include motor development activities as well as opportunities for art, music and sensory activities.  Children learn strength, balance and large muscle coordination, hand to eye coordination, and work together to develop friendships and teamwork with each other.

4:20pm – 4:30pm: Clean Up/ Transition to Afternoon Interest Group

4:30pm – 4:45pm: Afternoon Interest Group

Children participate in a teacher directed activity that has been designed to meet a specific area of the Desired Results. These activities include Reading Readiness, Language Development, Math Readiness, and Social Emotional Development.

4:45pm – 5:30pm: Interest Center/ Children’s Choices
The balance of the afternoon is spent in comfortably paced activities such as: care of pets, music, creative movement, block play, puzzles, book browsing and art activities, until each child is picked up.

The following holidays are observed by our Child Development Center:

   • New Year’s Day
   • Martin Luther King Day
   • President’s Day
   • Memorial Day
   • Independence Day
   • Labor Day
   • Thanksgiving Day (Thursday and Friday)
   • Christmas Day

If a holiday occurs during the weekend, CDA will close on the nationally recognized holiday.  The center does not close for school vacations.
